Gregory "Greg" Lee Patterson

Gregory "Greg" Lee Patterson, 73, of Waterloo, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at his home in Waterloo.

Greg was born June 22, 1951, in Waterloo, IA, son of the late William and Marjorie (Collings) Patterson. He was raised in Cedar Falls and graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1970. He earned an Associate's degree in Police Science from Hawkeye Community College and a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Upper Iowa University. He married Barbara Brainard on July 2, 1983, and they later divorced. Greg's professional life was marked by a deep commitment to helping others. He served his community as a Police Officer with the Waterloo Police Department, as a Youth Counselor and Supervisor at the State Training School, and as a volunteer firefighter in Eldora. His career culminated in his impactful work as a Child Abuse Investigator for the Department of Health and Human Services, from which he retired. In his retirement, Greg continued to support children and families at Families First.

Greg found joy in many passions, from the fairways of the golf course to the open road on his Harley. He was a dedicated member of the boxing community for many years, serving both as a coach and referee. Greg was also a loyal friend to many and a trusted servant of Bill W. Above all, Greg cherished his family, and his greatest happiness came from spending time with his beloved granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Greg is survived by his daughter, Jessa (Tim) Edson of Waterloo; granddaughter, Allison Edson; brother, Jeff (Pam) Patterson of St. Paul, MN; niece, Melanie (Scott) Klein; nephews, Matthew Patterson and Mitchell (Megan) Patterson; great-niece, Charlotte Patterson; longtime companion, Cindy Petersen of Johnston; and life-long friend, Jack Shafer.

Greg's celebration of life will be held from 1-4pm, Saturday, April 12th, at Fox Ridge Golf Course (355 Country Club Ln) in Dike. Memorial contributions may be directed to his family for future designation. Please visit www.dahlfuneralhome.com to share condolences.
