Steven Paul Retterath, 62, of Waterloo, died on Monday, August 31, 2026, at MercyOne Medical Center in Cedar Falls.
He was born in Cedar Falls on April 11, 1964, the son of Paul and Nancy (Myers) Retterath. From an early age, Steven had a love of the outdoors and a passion for competition. He raced and showed horses, and developed a love of motocross racing. Steven also developed a strong work ethic at a young age, working as store manager at the Pony Express Convenience Store. Steven graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1986. Over the course of his working life, Steven held positions with Tyson Foods, where he worked as a cook room operator and supervisor. He also spent 34 years at KPR, remaining there until his retirement due to ALS. On May 18, 2003, Steven married Candice “Candi” Murray at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.
Steven found great joy in the activities he loved. He enjoyed camping, jet skiing and playing golf. He participated in a number of softball and bowling leagues, and was known for always joking with friends and taking any of their unsupervised drinks. He was also a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus with St. Patrick Church in Cedar Falls. More than anything, Steven loved being with his family, and some of his happiest moments were spent watching his grandkids play sports.
Steven is survived by his wife, Candi Retterath of Waterloo; daughters, Caitlin (Tyler) Gielau of Waverly, Alyssa Retterath (Brad Shanks) of Nora Springs, Breanna (Bill) Peters of Aplington and April Murray (Rob Burnell) of Waterloo; grandchildren, Leo and Caroline Gielau, Brody, Paxton and Evalynn Peters, and Bryce Murray; brothers, Rick (Lora) Retterath of Cedar Falls and Mike Brookins of Waterloo; nieces and nephews, Brayton Retterath, Trevor and Taylor Sells, and Taylor (Kate) Brookins; and aunt and uncle, Diane and Dan Weaver. He was preceded in death by his parents.
His visitation will be held from 4-8pm, Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Prairie Lakes Church (1907 Viking Road, Cedar Falls). Visitation will continue from 10-11am, Wednesday, September 9, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11am, both at Prairie Lakes Church. Immediately following the service, Steven’s Celebration of Life will continue at Maple Lanes Bowling Center (2608 University Ave, Waterloo).
