Listen to Obituary

Jon E. Michaelsen, 77, formerly of Dike, died on Thursday, November 5, 2026, in Kansas City, MO. Jon was born in Waterloo, IA, on September 8, 1949, the son of Gilbert and Mary Jane (Reishen) Michaelsen. He graduated from Dike High School in Dike, IA, and began his life-long career in farming. He was also a part-time pilot for many years, officially retiring in the Fall of 2023. In August of 1971, Jon married Kaylene Meester, and had two children, Jess and Jamie. They later divorced.

In addition to Jon’s love of farming, he enjoyed rebuilding and collecting classing cars, antique tractors and antique furniture. He enjoyed riding his Harleys around the country, taking trips with friends as far as Alaska. Jon liked to hunt and fish, and spend time celebrating with friends. He, like his parents, was a winter Texan traveling south for the winter to stay warm. Jon was also a longtime member of the Masonic Shriners Honors Lodge No. 646 in Dike.

Jon is survived by his children, Jess (Leslie) Michaelsen and Jamie Dorothy both of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Grant and Carlie Michaelsen, Olivia (Ryan) Butler and Brock (Audrey) Dorothy; great-grandsons, Braxton Butler and Tate Dorothy; and siblings, Ron (Marsha) Michaelsen of Cedar Falls and Jane (Dale) Doddema of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Mary Jane Michaelsen.

Jon’s celebration of life will be held at 11am, Saturday, November 21, 2026, at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, with visitation an hour prior. A reception will immediately follow the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Ascend Hospice, 783 NE Anderson Lane, Lee’s Summit, MO 64064.
