He was born February 13, 1926, in Kokomo, Indiana, son of Albert and Hazel (Marshall) Winslow. After graduating from high school in Hannibal, Missouri, Bill enlisted in the army at age 17, making him one of the few remaining veterans of WWII. He earned his B.S. in Engineering from the University of Missouri, in 1949. Bill married Mary Virginia Klene on July 11, 1949, in Hannibal. They settled in Washington, Illinois. Bill retired January 1, 1988, from Caterpillar in Peoria, Illinois with 39 years of service.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty (Willard) North; and brother, Robert (Frances) Winslow. He is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Mary; daughters, Anne (Ron) Gschwend of Olympia, Washington, and Marty (Ric) Foreman of Waterloo, Iowa; 6 grandchildren: Charlie, Christopher and Curtis Gschwend, Natalie (Kurt) Walker, Alice (Stephanie) Foreman, Grant Foreman; and 5 great-grandchildren: Eli & Rosie Gschwend and Callista, Caspian and Atlas Walker.
Bill's Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am on Friday, October 27, 2023, at St. Edward Catholic Church of Waterloo with visitation on Thursday from 5-7 pm with rosary at 5 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home of Cedar Falls. Bill will be interred with military honors at Glendale Cemetery of Washington, Illinois at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 28, 2023, with assistance from Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Patrick School in Washington, Illinois, or the Alzheimer's Association.
Travel was an important part of their lives. They fulfilled their goal of visiting all 50 states. Mary & Bill explored Europe, Mexico and Canada; cruised the Mediterranean, through the Panama Canal and sailed the Caribbean. Sanibel Island and Maui were his favorite places. Many fun trips were shared with Mary's brother Dave and wife Sandy.
Bill and Mary were lifelong learners and best friends who enjoyed many loving conversations. During good meals shared with family and friends there was always another bottle of good red wine to be brought up from the basement! He valued his friends, always putting other people at ease. Above all else, Bill cherished his family and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed!
A special thanks to the staff at Thuesen Cottage for their caring and kindness these last few months.
