Walter Combes, 90, of Cedar Falls, passed away on Monday January 12, 2026, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo. He was born in Wright County, Minnesota, on February 19, 1935, the son of Walter and Verna (Pugh) Combes. Walter served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-1957 during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he started working for John Deere, where he retired after over 30 years of service. He married Alice Mundt, and later divorced. On April 15, 1978, Walter married Jean Shepard in Cedar Falls. Walter was a life member and trustee of the Sullivan Brothers VFW Post 1623 in Waterloo and an active member of the Waterloo American Legion Becker Chapman Post 138 Honor Guard. He was also a life member of the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.
Walter is survived by his wife, Jean Combes of Cedar Falls; sons, Wally in Missouri, Jeff in Arizona and Victor (Kristi) in North Carolina; daughter, Stefanie Forrester of Waterloo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and five siblings in Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three siblings.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-5pm, Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the Sullivan Brothers VFW Post 1623, 1406 Commercial St., in Waterloo. Military honors will be rendered at 2pm by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard and American Legion Becker Chapman Post 138 Honor Guard of Waterloo. Memorial contributions may be directed to his family.
