Virjeanne Jean Petersen

Virjeanne (Jean) Petersen, 88, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Bickford Cottage in Cedar Falls. She was born May 14, 1929 in Boone, Iowa and raised by her mother Nona and step-father Dick Nordman. Jean graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1947. She married Bob Bancroft and they were later divorced. Jean married Joe Petersen in August of 1967 and he preceded her in death in December of 1993.

Among her many accomplishments, Jean was an avid golfer and longtime member of Beaver Hills Country Club, serving on the Board as well as various committees.She took pride in her # 1 membership and Hole-in-One. Jean was  very involved in class reunions and served as chairperson for many years through the 65th reunion in 2012.

Jean was devoted to her children, her community and her faith as a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church; loved music, especially the Beatles, and dancing. She had a keen sense of business, honor, commitment and a wonderful sense of humor. Jean will be missed by many.

She is survived by three daughters, Pam (George) Schwartz of Lincoln, Nebraska, Katie (Ray) Pearson, of Cedar Falls, and Sue (Ron) Cook,  of Cedar Falls; one son Mike (Deb) Bancroft, of Port St. Lucie, Florida; two nieces, Rebecca (Glen) Penland in California and Chris (Tim) Hippen, of Aplington, Iowa; one nephew, Terry (LaRee) DeGroote, of Parkersburg, Iowa; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren and a longtime friend and companion, Bill Burke.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe Petersen, and one sister, Hazel DeGroote.

Memorial services will be private. Public visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Celebration of Life will be Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Pump Haus Pub & Grill in Cedar Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Unity Point Hospice, Alzheimer's Association or Bickford Cottage in Cedar Falls and Nazareth Lutheran Church.
