Virgil W. Johnson, 89, of Waverly, Iowa, died at home on Saturday, September 6, 2008. He was born October 3, 1918 in Grundy County, Iowa, the son of John J. and Clarinda (Souy) Johnson. Virgil married Mary Luders on February 3, 1940 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She preceded him in death on June 6, 2004. Virgil was a set-up man and mechanic at the International Harvester dealership in Waverly, a mechanic for Bremer County, and retired from the maintenance department at the Waverly Shell Rock School District.
Survivors include two sons, Albert W. (Judy) Johnson of Traer, Iowa and Steven R. (Brenda) Johnson of Waterloo, Iowa; three daughters, Judy Johnson McCloud (Allan Rushford) of New Providence, Iowa, and Connie Johnson (Duane) Schneider and Sandra Johnson (Arlin) Thoms, both of Waverly; sixteen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; and four brothers and three sisters.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and wife; a great grandson, David Johnson; ten brothers and sisters, and his son-in-law, Larry McCloud.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with a private family committal service at Washington Chapel Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 6—8:00 pm Tuesday, and one hour before service, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family.
