Viola Syhlman, 84, of Dike, Iowa, died from complications of an aneurysm on Sunday, November 4, 2007, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. She was born July 1, 1923 in Parkersburg, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Fannie (Van Hauen) Tjepkes. Viola married Alvin F. Syhlman on April 22, 1943 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 26, 2004. Viola was a graduate of Parkersburg High School and farmed with her husband most of her life near Dike. She was also an accomplished musician, playing at many events in the metropolitan area.
Survivors include her son, Steve (Pam) Syhlman, of Waterloo; her daughter, Sylvia (Robert) Frenchick, of Iowa Falls, Iowa; six grandchildren, Brian and Mark Bertram, Chad and Matt Syhlman, Phillip Frenchick and Rachel Dezarn; eight great grandchildren, and a son-in-law, Raymond Bertram, of Waterloo.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents and husband, a daughter, Sandra Bertram, and two brothers, Albert and Alfred Tjepkes.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, November 7, 2007, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg. Visitation will be 4—7:00 pm Tuesday, November 6, and one hour before service Wednesday, at the funeral home. A memorial fund will be established.
