Verda Marie (Pieper) McMahon, 92, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Parkersburg, died Friday, May 4, 2012, at NewAldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls. She was born April 12, 1920, to the parents of Clara (Wahlin) and George Pieper of Vail, Iowa. Verda attended school in Vail and was graduated from Vail Public School in 1937. She went on to further her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA, receiving a teaching degree. After college, Verda taught school for two years and later worked as a substitute teacher for 30 years. She married Morrell "Salty" McMahon on Dec. 31, 1943, in La Jolla, CA, where Salty was stationed in the U.S. Army. When Salty was deployed to the South Pacific, Verda returned to Iowa and lived with her parents during World War II. After the war, Salty and Verda lived in Vail from 1946 to 1957. They then moved to Liscomb, IA, until 1963, when they moved to Parkersburg, IA. Salty died in 1990. Verda then moved to Cedar Falls. Verda was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Vail. She regularly attended Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and her many friends. Verda was an avid coffee drinker, card player, and loved pies and sweet rolls. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Karen McMahon of Lakeville, Minnesota; a daughter and son-in-law, Rochelle and Kevin Bienemann of Lakeland, Tennessee; a sister, Cleta Schultz, of Rolling Hills Estate, California; four grandchildren, Kelsey and Kinsey Bienemann and Maggie and Sean McMahon, and several nieces and nephews. Verda was preceded in death by her husband Salty, her parents, and her sister, Donna Mae Nelson. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls.
