STRATTON JAMES SHANNON was born June 18, 1916 in Wautoma, Wisconsin, the son of James and Lucille (Stratton) Shannon. He married Harriett Jane Gearhart on September 20, 1941 in Mason City, Iowa. Harriett preceded him in death on February 12, 1998. Stratton operated his own independent insurance agency, Shannon Insurance Agency, in Cedar Falls, Iowa for many years, retiring in December of 1981. He was past president of the Cedar Falls Lions Club and was the Melvin Jones Award Winner and past commodore of the Black Hawk County U.S. Power Squadron. Stratton died Saturday, February 2, 2002 at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, at 85 years of age.
He is survived by his children, Mary Patricia Van Oort and her husband Larry of Cedar Falls, JoAnn Laing and her husband James of La Jolla, California, Lynn Kimble and her husband Ty of Cedar Falls and Dr. Stratton John Shannon and his wife Amy of Lee, Maine; twelve grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; his sister, Juanita Jones of Mason City, Iowa and his dear friend, Mary Bruhn of Cedar Falls. Stratton was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
Funeral Mass was 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with private inurnment at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Falls Lions Club.
