Steven D. Acker, 70, formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024 at Corydon Specialty Care in Corydon, Iowa.
Steve was born in Waterloo on March 19, 1954, the son of Richard and LaRue (Dietz) Acker. He was a gifted athlete from an early age, participating in nearly every sport. However, he truly excelled in football and hockey. Steve was invited to the elite-level hockey camp, TAM-O-SHANTER, in Toronto, Canada, attended Johnny Majors football camp in Ames, IA, and earned All-State honors as a tight end for Waterloo West High School. He graduated from West High in 1972, and went on to attend Mankato State before transferring to the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) where he graduated in 1977. Steve's love for flying led him to Daytona Beach, FL, where he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and earned his instrument rating.
Steve's career in aviation was extensive and diverse. He worked as a flight instructor for Niederhauser Airways prior to becoming a pilot for Britt Airlines. Later, Steve transitioned to selling fractional airplane ownership for Humble Travel, and worked as an airplane broker, selling airplanes for various companies. Steve also had a successful career as a sales rep for FedEx, where he won several awards and earned many trips for his exemplary performance.
His love of hockey carried into his later years as well. Steve was involved as a coach for youth hockey, and showcased his skills playing in an adult hockey league for many years. Steve also loved to spend time with family and friends, especially sail boating with his brother-in-law. His favorite place to visit and spend the summers was the family cottage at Lake Chetek in Wisconsin, where he became a proficient water skier.
Steve's legacy is one of passion and love for family, friends, and the pursuits that brought him joy. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his two sisters, Debbie (Jim) Metcalf of Janesville, IA, and Joanie (Bob) Sansone of Muskego, WI; nephews, Charlie (Roxy) Metcalf of Janesville, IA, and Bobby (Sarah) Sansone of McFarland, WI; and many cousins and friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Richard Acker and LaRue Travlos.
Steve's celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at AMVETS Post 49, 1934 Irving St in Cedar Falls from 5-7:30pm. In Lieu of flowers, please direct memorial contributions to
