Russell Cantine

Russell A. Cantine, 92, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, February 9, 2014, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. He was born February 26, 1921 in Quimby, Iowa, the son of Germ Russell and Verna (Wright) Cantine. Russell married J. Margaret Christensen on June 20, 1943 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. She preceded him in death on November 29, 2005. Russell was a 1938 graduate of Quimby High School and earned his B.A. from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and his M.A. from the University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II and the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Russell and his wife owned the Coast to Coast store in Waverly, Iowa, retiring in 1983. Survivors include two sons, Thomas C. Cantine of Prescott Valley, Arizona and Timothy S. (Jennifer) Cantine of Decorah, Iowa; a daughter, Penelope S. (Jonathan) Stull, of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Russell was preceded in death by his parents and wife, two brothers, Chas and Sam Cantine, and two sisters, Zelda Meyer and Cleo McCarthy. Private funeral services and visitation will be Friday, February 14, 2014. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls, where military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
