Robert A. Hughes, Jr., 87, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, September 6, 2007, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa. He was born January 20, 1920 in Waterloo, the son of Robert A. Hughes, Sr. and Leatha Mae O'Brink Hughes. Robert married Joan Margaret Caley on April 16, 1948 in Independence, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 18, 1996. Robert served with the Eighth Air Force, flying thirty-three missions in the European Theatre of Operations, during WW II. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corp from 1936-1938 near McGregor, Iowa and was employed at John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo for thirty-six years, retiring May 1, 1979. Robert was past president and member of the Black Hawk County Conservation Board (1966-1976). He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed golf, cooking and reading.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel (LeAnn) Hughes and Michael (Bonnie) Hughes, both of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Debra (Dean) Frost of Gilbertville, Iowa, Kim (Ron) Kelly of Cedar Falls, and Michael Ann; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and wife, a brother, Raymond Hughes, and a sister, Delpha Mae Hokansen.

Graveside committal service will be 11:00 am Monday, September 10, 2007, at Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls, where military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. There will be no visitation, his body was cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
