Robert William Hewlitt, Jr., 42, of San Bernardino, California, formerly of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Sunday, October 14, 2012, in Ontario, California. He was born March 12, 1970 in Cedar Falls, the son of Robert and Doris (Wingerak) Hewlitt. Rob was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. He attended St. Patrick School and Holmes Jr. High School in Cedar Falls, and was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and the University of Northern Iowa in 1993, with a BA in Computer Science. Rob married Margaret Thompson on April 21, 2001 in El Paso, Texas, and they later divorced. Rob wrote software for many companies including John Deere, Newcorp, Amx, Ocellaris, and had been working with Gale Banks Power Engineering on racing engines in San Bernardino, California. The 8000 Series and later John Deere tractors all were controlled in part by his software. Rob loved to play cards, computer games, collect Star Wars memorabilia, and family reunions. Survivors include his parents, Robert and Doris Hewlitt, of Cedar Falls; a brother, Reid (Sue) Hewlitt, of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Rebecca (Sherman) Zieman of Postville, Iowa and Rachel Hewlitt of Austin, Texas; two nephews, Zander and Zayden Zieman; one niece, Cicily Hewlitt, and many aunts, uncles and cousins in Canada. Robert was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, and several aunts and uncles. Services will be 10:00 am Friday, October 26, 2012, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service.
