Richard A. Wittren, 92, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, May 9, 2015, at UnityPoint Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He was born January 7, 1923, in Fairchild, Wisconsin, the son of Arthur and Bernice (Miller) Wittren. Richard married Betty Morelock on November 11, 1945, in Cedar Falls. She preceded him in death on May 11, 2005. Richard served in Patton's Third Army in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He was a graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in hydraulic engineering. Richard was a Hydraulic Engineer at John Deere for 32 years. He was a member of the John Deere Supervisors Club and also a former member of Toastmasters International. Richard is survived by four daughters, Joan (Dean) Smith of Evansdale, Karen (Bill Powell) York of Sharon, Wisconsin, Karla Trower of Cedar Falls, and Cynthia (Tony) French of Finchford, Iowa; one son, Karl Wittren of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Mendes of Junction City, Oregon, and one son-in-law, Chris Nelson of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; one daughter, Rebecca Nelson; one son, William Wittren; one grandson, Nicholas Trower; one sister, Patsy Miller; one brother, Robert Wittren, and two sons-in-law, Ed York and James Trower. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVEST Post #49.
