Richard "Dick" Patrick Loughren, 84, Cedar Falls, died Monday, March 3, 2025 with his beloved wife by his side.
Dick was born January 21, 1941 in Independence to the late Bernard and Mary "Loretta" (McDowell) Loughren, the oldest of 10 children, and raised on the family farm in rural Monti. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monti, graduating from St. Patrick School in Ryan in 1959. While in high school, Dick was a star basketball player scoring 1,000 points. He attended Loras College in Dubuque earning his Bachelor's Degree in 1963 in Philosophy & Education. While at Loras College, Dick met Sheila Marie Maloney and the couple was married on August 13, 1966 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elkhart. From 1963-70, he taught and coached basketball and baseball at Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville. He went on to earn his Master's Degree in Secondary Guidance & Counseling from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1970. Dick then went on to work as a Guidance Counselor in the Jesup Community Schools for 29 years from 1970-99 when he retired. He was a football and basketball official for the Iowa High School Athletics Association and the Iowa Conference for 25 years. The couple then enjoyed spending winters in Texas for many years. In 2015, they moved to the Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls after living in Waterloo for their entire married life. Dick and Sheila also enjoyed many summers at their lake home on Mule Lake in Longville, MN.
Dick was very proud of his Irish heritage and passionate sports fan. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and lifelong Dodgers, Packers and Celtics fan. Dick enjoyed traveling, cruising, golfing and fishing. He was especially delighted to be Pa to his 5 cherished grandchildren.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Sheila; children, Katie (Craig) Johnson of Bondurant, Kevin Loughren of Ankeny and Beth Loughren of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Kelcie (Drew) Langel, Luke Loughren, Lydia, Grace and Bridget Johnson; siblings, Sr. Mary Kay Loughren, Don (Gloria) Loughren, Sr. Marge Loughren, Jim (Lois) Loughren, Ken (Elaine) Loughren, Janet (Terry) Whitney and Mike (Dianne) Loughren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, James and Nora Maloney; sister & brother-in-law, Connie and Greg Fawcett; sister, Sara Hiller; brother-in-law, Bill Maloney; sister-in-law, Mary Jo McKinney; nieces and nephews, Christopher Loughren, Morgan, Caitlin & Kelcie Hiller, Victor Loughren, Jacob Lipski and Shelby Kearns.
Mass of Christian Burial for Dick will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (650 Stephen Avenue, Waterloo). Visitation will from 3:00-5:00 PM on Wednesday, March 5 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home; resuming at 9:30 AM on Thursday at the church until the time of service. Burial will be at 2:00 on Thursday at St. Patrick Cemetery, Monti. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Dick's family for a future charitable donation in his memory.
