Listen to Obituary

Richard "Dick" Jay Boger, 86, of Aplington, passed away at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, December 15, 2024. He was born in Martin, South Dakota, on March 12, 1938, son of Henry and Hazel (Hein) Boger. Dick attended Ackley High School. On September 16, 1961, he was married to Wilma May Minikus in Clay, South Dakota. Dick worked at the John Deere Engine Works for 30 years, retiring in 1995.

Dick was the ultimate handyman. His daughters never had to buy a vehicle because he would find fixer uppers and, well, fix 'em up for his girls. Likewise, through the years, they would call their dad even before their own husbands if they had an accident or breakdown because they knew he could get them up and running. This perk trickled down to the grandchildren too. Dick was a true cowboy who always had his own horses (as many as 30 at one point!). He loved to ride horseback and when he was younger, he rode with the Ackley Saddle Club, then throughout life he enjoyed riding on the trails, around Stout, in pastures and in parades but when he got older, he put the horses out to pasture and bought a gator. The grandchildren and, later, great-grandchildren treasured time spent cruising around the acreage with grandpa. Dick had a great sense of humor and thoroughly enjoyed teasing his family. April 1 was one of his favorite days of the year and he was the very best at pranking those he loved each year.  Dick's source of pride and greatest legacy is the family he leaves behind.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Virgil Boger (infant), Norma (Zip) Ehrig, Virginia (Rich) Skow, Donald (Delores) Boger and Myron (Georgia) Boger; a brother-in-law, Gerald Luppen; and his sweet yorkie, Pinsey.  He is survived by his bride of 63 years, Wilma; his daughters: Peggy (Monte) Luck of Stout, Lynette (Lance) Uhlenhopp of Aplington, Cindy (Dana) Luck of Stout, Kathy (Shawn) Hagedorn of Janesville and Susan (Russell) Rand of Wellsburg; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, with 4 more on the way; his sister, Sharon Luppen of Rock Island, Illinois; many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members; and his beloved yorkie, Bubba.

Dick's family will host a Visitation from 4-7:00 pm on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home.  There will be a Funeral Service, with an invitation to share memories at 5:30. Dick could usually be found in comfortable pants and a flannel shirt and his family invites you to dress similarly for comfort and to honor him. He will be cremated following the service. Memorials may be directed to the Family.
