Rachel A. Fitzhugh, 83, of Waterloo, died at her home, Thursday, July 23, 2009. She was born April 23, 1926 at Conway, Iowa, the daughter of Max and Chloris (Matheny) McCurdy. Rachel married Gail E. Fitzhugh on August 6, 1947 at Bedford, Iowa. She taught country school at Bedford and also worked for United Airlines. Rachel was an administrator for fifteen years at Taylor County Home near Bedford. She and her husband, Gail, moved to Waterloo in 1965 and they became the administrators at Country View for twenty five years, retiring in 1985.

Rachel is survived by her husband, Gail, of Waterloo; two sons, Dennis (Vicky) Fitzhugh, of Clinton, TN and Roy (Valinda) Fitzhugh, of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and one brother, Glen (Mary Lee) Sharp, of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step father, Ernest Sharp; two sisters, Mary Ann Irwin and Joyce McCurdy, and one brother, Gayland McCurdy.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Burial will be in Conway Cemetery, Conway, Iowa.
