Opal Nichols

Opal I. Nichols, 92, of Waterloo, died Sunday, October 18, 2015, at Friendship Village in Waterloo. Opal was born May 9, 1923 in Fredericksburg, Iowa, the daughter of Erwin & Edith (Braun) Stevenson. She married William Nichols May 14, 1944 in Sumner, Iowa. He preceded her in death January 25, 1992. Opal taught in country schools, was a wife and mother, and was a nurses aid at Sartori Memorial Hospital. Survivors include seven daughters, Sandra (John) Brucher, of Waterloo, Linda Stroud, of Waverly, Judy (Jerry) Buchan, of Waterloo, Rita Negus, of Waterloo, Ilene (James) Hitchcock, of Cedar Falls, Denise (Joe) Carthey, of Decorah, and Diane (Steve) Grapp, of Cedar Falls, 18 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren. Opal was preceded in death by her parents, husband; her son, James Nichols; a granddaughter, Jenni Iverson; a great grandson, Elijah Jones, and three brothers. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at Janesville United Methodist Church with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and one hour prior to service time at the church. Memorials may be directed to the church.
