Mildred "Millie" Tompkins, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the Western Home Communities Thalman Square in Cedar Falls. She was born April 23, 1925, in Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Julliette (Farcy) Michaelis. Millie served in the United States Navy WAVES during World War II. She married Theodore Tompkins on December 14, 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and he preceded her in death August 2, 1994. Millie was a telephone operator in Charles City and Waterloo with Northwestern Bell (Qwest) Telephone Company for thirty-six years, retiring in 1981. She is survived by one daughter, Sandra K. Kessel, of West Warwick, Rhode Island; two grandchildren, Kyle Kessel of Boston, Massachusetts and Meagan Kessel of Providence, Rhode Island; one brother, Donald (Akemi) Michaelis, of Dallas, Texas, and two sisters, Louise (Donald) McIntosh of Waterloo and Betty Colonnese of Mesa, Arizona. Millie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers, George, Harry and James Michaelis. Services will be 10:30 am Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, with inurnment at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation will be 46:00 pm Monday, and one hour before service Tuesday, at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.
