Michael Paul Berry, 83, of Waterloo, passed away at Pinnacle Specialty Care on Saturday, February 3, 2024. He was born in Dysart on August 11, 1940, son of Paul and Alice (Burger) Berry. Mike enlisted in the United States Navy serving from 1958-1961. Following an honorable discharge, he began his career in law enforcement with the Dysart Police Department. In 1966, Mike was hired for the Cedar Falls Police Department where he quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant serving for 30 years, even designing some of the department logos and vehicle graphics. He retired from the CFPD as head of the records department, but was immediately rehired for the same position as a civilian serving for an additional 13 years.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mitchell Alan; granddaughter, Madison Forbes; and sister, Carol (Duane) Mehlert. He is survived by his children: Rodney Berry of Cedar Falls, Kelly (Allen) Kisling of Parkersburg, Ona Wygle of Waverly, Josh (JoAnn) Berry of Cedar Falls, and Brita (Derrick) Marzen of Norwalk; grandchildren: Allison, Emma, Zach, Sean (Jen), Andrew, Becky, Jacob, Macey, Cael, Bodhi, Remy, Allie, Harper and Lyra; many great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy (Ron) Rieck of Center Point; and beloved nieces and nephews: Lisa Mehlert of Cedar Rapids, Cathy (John) Thuringer of Phoenix, Arizona, Randy (Laureen) Mehlert of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Ryan (Amy) Rieck and Dan (Sarah) Rieck all of Center Point.
Mike's family will host a Visitation from 4-7:00 pm on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home of Cedar Falls. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children's Hospital or the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund. Burial in the future at Evergreen Cemetery of Vinton.
Mike enjoyed fishing, camping and riding cross country on his motorcycle. Through the years, he coached his children in soccer and helped with maintenance work at the CF Soccer Complex. Mike liked to meet his friends for happy hour at local businesses such as Mulligans, OP or Panther Lounge. He served on the Boards of Directors for the Cedar Falls Police Protective Association and the Black Hawk County Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS). Mike was a police officer through and through!
