Mavis L. Purk, 88, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at Manor Care Health Services in West Des Moines, Iowa. She was born January 26, 1920 in Vernon Center, Minnesota, the daughter of Edward W. and Hulda M. (Beck) Swanson. Mavis married James F. Purk in Mason City, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 18, 2000. Mavis and her husband owned and operated Purk's Supervalue in Cedar Falls from 1953-1964. They later owned and operated Howard Johnson Motor Lodge in Cedar Falls from 1965-1989. After retiring they moved to Colorado.
Survivors include a son, Wayne (Judy Pullin) Purk, of Cedar Falls; two grandsons, Steven (Maureen) Purk of Sacramento, California and Dr. Jeffrey W. Purk of Des Moines, Iowa; two great grandchildren, Owen and Jillian Purk, of Sacramento; and a sister, Aurice Gilman, of Mankota, Minnesota.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents and husband, and a brother, Lyle Swanson.

Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Monday, September 15, 2008, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, with entombment at Garden of Memories Mausoleum in Waterloo. Visitation will be one hour before service. Memorials may be directed to the family.
