Mary Dorothy Shields

Mary Dorothy Shields, 77, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, August 4, 2016, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. She was born December 18, 1938 in Raymond, Iowa, the daughter of William Peter and Mary Margaret (Lutgen) Heinen. Mary married Eugene "Gene" Shields on June 13, 1959 in Preston, Minnesota. He preceded her in death on April 8, 2013. Mary worked at Sartori Memorial Hospital for five years, Control-O-Fax for 27 years, and retired as a "Sure Care" caregiver.

She is survived by her son, Mark Shields, of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Sharon (Charles) McNelly of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Elizabeth Randall of Rogers, Arkansas, Amber (Levi) Loy of Hudson, Iowa and Zach (Devin) Shields of Cedar Falls; two great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mildred (Bob) Clark of Indiana and Marie Heinen of Traer, Iowa.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two sons, Gene and Timothy Shields; a daughter, Theresa Randall; four sisters, Evelyn Wagner, Rosella Miller, Marge Jay and Ann Tomkins, and five brothers, Joseph, Ernest, William, Nicholas and Lloyd Heinen.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2016, at First Christian Church in Cedar Falls, with inurnment at Washington Chapel Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 2—5:00 p.m. Sunday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the church.
