MARY JANE (PALEN) SEVERIN was born November 24, 1914 in Dubuque, Iowa the daughter of Dr. Charles and Elizabeth (Spillman) Palen. During the late 1930s, she served as the Society Editor of the Dubuque Telegraph Herald. She met fellow journalist William Durst Severin in the Telegraph Herald newsroom and on September 20, 1943, they were married in San Francisco, California. They settled in Cedar Falls following WWII, where her husband served as an Associate Editor for the Waterloo Courier and wrote the front page "Iron Duke" column. He died March 11, 1989. Mary Jane died Wednesday, August 7, 2002 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo at the age of 87 years. Survivors include: two daughters, Patricia Horvath of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Barbara (John) Lounsberry of Cedar Falls; a son, Christopher Severin of Palatine, Illinois; five grandchildren, Jackson (Elizabeth) Lounsberry of Independence, Geoffrey (Heather) Horvath of Ft. Rucker, Alabama, Thomas Horvath of Lansing, Michigan, James and Elizabeth Horvath, both of Grand Rapids, Michigan; three great grandchildren, Samuel and Madeline Lounsberry of Independence, and Olivia Scarlett of Lansing, Michigan; and one sister, Mary (Robert) Sullivan of Dubuque. Mary Jane was preceded in death by: three sisters, Elizabeth Lochner, Barbara Faber, and Ancy McFadden; and two brothers, Charles and Robert Palen.

Private Funeral Service were held Monday morning, August 12, 2002 with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls. Friends were invited to a public reception from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Monday at Friendship Village Cove Lounge, 3720 Village Place, Waterloo, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Friendship Village Auxiliary.
