Mary E. McCarter, 78, died at home March 15, 2024 of esophageal cancer. Mary was born December 5, 1945 in Waverly, Iowa to Edward B. and Dorothy E. (Crowell) Ericksen. Following high school, she attended Gates Business College and graduated from there. Mary was united in marriage to John McCarter on June 17, 1967. For many years the couple worked together in the family business, McCarter Reporting, with Mary working as a stenographer and administrator and later in interior design for Ubben Building Supply and janitorial services for the US Post Office retiring in 2016.
In her retirement years Mary enjoyed watching TV, especially HGTV, and UTV mule rides in the pasture. She was also very active at her church throughout her life with bible studies and singing in the choir. Mary loved to spend quiet time sitting on her patio and watching many beautiful sunsets. Mary was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, John; son, Michael (Cortney) McCarter; daughter, Sarah (Timothy) Bixby; grandchildren, MaryClaire, Brian and Corbin McCarter, Carter and Grant Bixby; brother, Steven E. (Cleo) Ericksen; sister, Margaret E. Nielsen, all of Dike, and extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, Clark and Ruth Crowell and Chris and Eva Ericksen; brother-in-law, Tim W. Nielsen; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Beverly McCarter; and sister-in-law, Donnie Simmons.
The funeral service will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Dike United Methodist Church (439 Church Street, Dike, Iowa). Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 PM on Monday, March 18 at Dike United Methodist Church; resuming on Tuesday at 9:30 until the time of service at the church. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Dike at a later date. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Memorials may be directed to the family for a future charitable donation.
