Mary Virginia "Ginny" Bergen, 79, died after a lengthy illness on Friday, Dec. 8, at St Mary's Hospital, Rochester MN. Ginny was born on May 11, 1927, the eldest daughter of George J. Hughes and Mary Clementine Brophy, at Elma. She was raised on the family farm, attended Our Lady of Lourdes School in Lourdes, and graduated from East High School, Waterloo. Ginny married Carter J. (Jake) Bergen of Waterloo, on Oct. 6, 1951. They resided most of their married life in Cedar Falls.

Survivors include a daughter, Julie (Chris) Donielson and their children Will Sharpe and Cole of San Antonio TX; and 2 sons: Carter J. (Barb) and their children Jessica, Chelsea and Byron of Woodbury, MN, and Nicholas and his children CJ and Jenna of Lewisville CO. Survivors also include 2 sisters, Peggy (Francis) Nibaur of Elma, and Donna (Glen) Cashman of Alta Vista, and 1 brother, David (Martha) of Herndon VA. Preceding her death were both parents, her husband, and a brother William.

Ginny was very active during much of her married life upbringing her own children and managed for many years in her Cedar Falls home a charming and efficient child care center. She worked most recently for the Public Library in Cedar Falls. She was active in her local church and was an active gardener, and designer and maker of clothes and crafts for family and friends.

Public visitation will be held at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, 4 to 8 PM Tuesday, Dec. 12. Funeral services are planned for 11:00 AM, Wednesday Dec. 13 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
