Marlene Mae Deery, 93, Cedar Falls, died Sunday, April 26, 2026 at the Stanard Assisted Living in Deery Suites.
Marlene was born September 8, 1932 in Madison, WI to the late Sylvester and Grace (Gruber) Heiser. She graduated from the St. Anthony School of Nursing in Rockford, IL. Marlene went on to practice nursing at St Anthony’s hospital. It was there she met John Deery, as he was her patient recovering from a car accident. He swept her off her feet and they married on May 29, 1954 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Plain, WI. The couple were blessed with two sons, John Jr and Dan.
Marlene will be remembered for her friendly smile and her sweet and kind demeanor. She enjoyed an active life, living in Cedar Falls for the past 54 years. She was an active member of St. Patrick church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Cedar Falls Women's club and PEO.
Marlene treasured her family and her faith most of all. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She went to countless activities for her grandchildren and even great grandchildren. She was always willing and eager to babysit and have the grandkids over for sleep overs. She loved being a part of each one of their lives. Everyone loved Grandma Marlene.
Marlene is survived by her sons, John (Jodi) Deery and Dan (Julie) Deery both of Cedar Falls; grandchildren, Jennifer Conder, Johnny Deery, Daina Weber, Deeni Fischels, DJ Deery, Dustin Deery, Dylan Deery, Deserai Tuttle and Dallas Jenkins; 28 great-grandchildren; and extended family and friends along with her special friend, Pat Murphy. She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years; parents; brothers, Lloyd and Ralph Heiser and great grandson Eli Deery.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM on Friday, May 8 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, May 7 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with the rosary beginning at 6:30 PM; visitation will resume at 9:00 AM on Friday at the church. Committal will be at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be directed to St. Patrick Catholic School please write “Marlene Deery” in the memo line of checks.
