Mark Lee Block, 67, of Evansdale died of heart failure on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at his home. Mark was born near Tripoli, Iowa on June 28, 1941, the son of Raymond and Florence C. (Kirchoff) Block. He graduated from Tripoli High School in 1959 and enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly thereafter, serving over three years mostly in Germany as a Spec. 4th Class in a Military Police unit. He attended classes at University of Northern Iowa and worked for several employers in Waterloo including A.Y. McDonalds, Montgomery Ward, and John Deere Tractor Works.
Mark had a great interest in the native American Indian cultures and spent a great deal of time researching their historical past. He was also interested in genealogy and had assembled a family genealogy tree dating back to 1705.
Mark is survived by a sister, Mary Grosse of Cedar Falls, a brother, Dave (Ruth) Block of Pismo Beach, CA, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mark fellowshipped at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls and was a member of the American Legion in Waterloo.
Memorial services will be 11:00 am, Friday, January 23, 2009, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Inurnment will be at a later date.
