Marilyn Jean Hasbrouck, 85, died on Friday, October 11, 2024 at the Western Home Communities Deery Suites in Cedar Falls.
Born May 28, 1939 to the late Clifford and Helen (Granger) Isley, Marilyn was raised on a farm on the outskirts of Cedar Falls. She always spoke tenderly of her years growing up on the farm, helping with the day-to-day chores. She could be heard commenting that these years gave her an appreciation and love for nature.
Marilyn married RW "Bill" Van Sant in 1957. During the early years of their marriage Marilyn worked as a secretary for Don Mattson, Dean, at the University of Iowa Engineering Department, supporting their young family as Bill pursued his academic goals.
Marilyn was a beloved mother, raising three children. She could be seen at every athletic event her children participated in during the middle and high school years, cheering the team(s) on. She was an avid reader, with her favorite genre being historical fiction. In her spare time, Marilyn loved to run, ride her bike, needlepoint, and travel.
At the age of 40, Marilyn attended the University of Northern Iowa completing her four-year degree in business. She went on to work at John Deere Credit Union (now Veridian).
In 1996, Marilyn married Don Hasbrouck. Together they regularly attended Nazareth Lutheran Church where they participated in ongoing bible studies and created and established dear friendships. Don and Marilyn loved to snowbird in AZ, take walks, ride bikes, play cards, and attend plays at Gallager Auditorium in Cedar Falls. Marilyn also loved football, holding tickets to watch the UNI Panthers play at the UNI Dome and continued to support her long-time honored team, the Iowa Hawkeyes. Don and Marilyn traveled together and with friends within the states and overseas.
Marilyn is survived by her children, Bill (Marsha) Van Sant, David (Mary) Van Sant, and Kathy Hinders (Kevin Burkholder); seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind Don's children, Douglas Hasbrouck (Faye Anderson) and Cynthia (Jason) Schultz; and step-daughter-in-law, Kris Hasbrouck. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Don, Gilbert and Rollin Isley; second husband, Don Hasbrouck; and Don's son, Steven Hasbrouck.
Marilyn's visitation will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 1-3pm at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. The inurnment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls at a later date. Please visit www.dahlfuneralhome.com to share condolences with the family.
