Lois Ann Burgess, 75, of Cedar Falls, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City.
Lois was born in Mason City, IA, on July 14, 1950, and was adopted by Everett and Alma (Kampmann) Johnson. From an early age, she was a talented musician and vocalist. While attending Allison-Bristol High School, she joined choir and band, and won many state awards in both. Lois graduated in 1968, before attending Waldorf University in Forrest City, where she was a member of the Waldorf College Concert Choir. She also played piano as well. While at Waldorf, Lois would meet the love of her life, Joel Burgess. On February 15, 1970, they were married in Allison, IA, at St. James Lutheran Church.
Lois worked various jobs throughout her life. She started as a part-time sales associate with Mini Dozer, before working as a laundry attendant at the Cedar Falls Health Center (now Hudson Place) and Western Home Communities. She also worked at Brookside Manor in Cedar Falls as an assistant cook. Lois also coached youth bowling and was the Den Mother for her son’s Cub Scout troop and Webelos Leader for many years.
Lois was a talented bowler. Joel and her spent countless hours at the alleys playing in various leagues and tournaments. She had a large collection of dolls and would sew her own custom clothing for them. Lois was also an avid follower of the Royal Family and stayed current on their affairs.
Lois is survived by her husband of 56 years, Joel Burgess of Cedar Falls; two sons, Tim and Christ Burgess both of Cedar Falls; granddaughter Olivia (Katrina) Abben of Waterloo; and great-granddaughter, Mallory Abben. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Alma Johnson.
