Leander Anthony Brown

Leander Anthony Brown, 89, Waverly, died Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at the Waverly Health Center.

Leander was born March 17, 1932 in Penhook, VA to the late Leander and Wessye (Taylor) Brown.  Following his graduation from high school, Leander enlisted in the US Air Force and honorably served his country earning the rank of A/1C.  Following his service, he went on to earn his PhD in Educational Psychology from Iowa State University.  Leander married Catherine Alford on October 10, 1970 in Cedar Falls and he began working at UNI in the Dept. of Educational Psychology.  He loved teaching and helped educate countless students over his 44 years with UNI.

Leander was a very good man who dearly loved all of his family.  He enjoyed attending sporting events with family and travelling across the country with his grandchildren.  He could be very determined in his opinions with a quick wit and great sense of humor.  In a labor of love, Leander took it upon himself to meticulously restore his childhood Schwinn bicycle to perfect condition.  Those who know him know of his love of all cars especially his prized Porsche.

Leander is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Catherine; children, LyAnn (Chris) Western, Debbie (Howard) Robinson, William (Kathy) Daniels, Leander  Brown and Brandon Brown; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Bertha Johnson, Oshia Reid, Helen (Joe) Brown, Jean (Albert) Mann and Brenda (Charles) Becton and extended family and friends.  He is preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Reed; son, Steve Daniels and brother, William Brown.

There will be a Memorial Visitation for Leander from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 11 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a future charitable donation.
