Lavern Lee Smith

Lavern Lee Smith, 81, of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 15, 2017, at NorthCrest Specialty Care in Waterloo. He was born September 8, 1935 in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Clark and Rose Mary (Gallmeyer) Smith. Lavern married Edna V. "Vi" Johnson on February 24, 1956 in Nashua, Iowa, and they later divorced. He married Barbara Cook in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and they later divorced. Lavern was a graduate of Marshalltown High School and served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years.

He is survived by four daughters, Cindy Hinders of Clarksville, Iowa, Susan Prusia of Waterloo, Deborah (Dennis) Gage of Garrison, Iowa and Michelle Smith of Branson, Missouri; a son, Randy Smith, of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence (Ruth) Smith of Cedar Falls and Marvin Smith of Clarksville, and a sister, Norma Izer, of Waterloo.

Lavern was preceded in death by his parents, Clark Smith and Rose Mary Smith Crosby; his foster parents, Lloyd & Gladys Hughes; two sons, Rob and Brian Smith; a granddaughter, Stephanie Smith, and a son-in-law, Jerry Hinders.

Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 28, 2017, at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.  Military honors will be conducted by Clarksville AMVETS Post 30.  Visitation will be 5—7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home.
