Laurene Kay Saathoff, 71, of Waverly (formerly of Clarksville) passed away at the Waverly Health Center on Friday, March 28, 2025. She was born in Waterloo on November 30, 1953, daughter of William and Ruth (Hyde) Smith. Laurene graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1972, then attended Gates Business College and Hawkeye Tech where she studied business. She married Robert Peter Saathoff on July 7, 1973, at Nazareth Lutheran Church. Laurene worked for Black's Department Store, Tasco, Asgrow/O's Gold and, finally, the City of Cedar Falls as City Data Processing Manager retiring in March 2017 with 32 years of service.
Laurene was preceded in death by her father; mother; daughter, Abbey Doxey; sister, Phyllis Blew; and her parents-in-law, Pete and Darlene Saathoff. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bob; daughter, Nicole Saathoff of Clarksville; son-in-law, Wes Doxey of Waverly; grandchildren, Peyton, Colt and Cutter; siblings: Luana (Jim) King of San Angelo, TX, Linda Holt of Mitchellville, William (Tami) Smith of Jesup and Tammy Smith of Dysart; sisters-in-law: Verlene (Neale) Oldenburger, Patsy (Gaylen) Winterberg and Denise (Jeff) Gibbs; and many beloved nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Laurene's Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Nazareth Lutheran Church with Visitation from 4-7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home both of Cedar Falls. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery of New Hartford. Though Laurene loved flowers and plants, a Memorial to either the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or Cedar Valley Hospice would honor her memory with greater impact.
Laurene was very creative and enjoyed sewing, quilting and embroidery. She was also a fantastic cook and baker and an enthusiastic reader. Laurene liked to travel and was even able to visit Tanzania, Italy and Greece. Faith and family were central to her life and she adored shopping so every Sunday included the 3 C's: Church, Culvers and Crossroads. Laurene was a member of the Clarksville PEO (there will be special reserved seating in front at her funeral). Her belief, courage, strength and dignity carried her through life's many challenges and she crossed the finish line on Friday having run with perseverance, the race that was set before her (Hebrews 12:1-3).
