Larry Lee Bass

Larry Lee Bass, 76, of New Hartford, died Friday, November 3, 2023 at Waverly Health Center.

Larry was born in Waterloo on September 23, 1947, the son of Walter "Bud" and Lucille (Bacon) Bass. He was a proud graduate from New Hartford High School, class of 1965. Larry married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Sells, in Cedar Falls on July 2, 1966. He enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, serving as a Military Police Officer from 1969-1970.

Following his service, Larry joined his wife back in New Hartford and started farming. He was owner and operator of Monkey Mountain Dairy and Bass Oil Company. Larry became a Police Officer and eventually worked as a Reserve Deputy for the Butler County Sheriff's Office. However, he couldn't get away from his love of farming and continued working various jobs assisting the farming community around New Hartford. In 2011, Larry officially retired as Jail Administrator for Butler County after 30 years of service to the county.

Larry loved playing cards, playing pool, riding horses, talking to others, and helping those in need. He also wasn't afraid to strip down to his underwear if it meant allowing him to be more comfortable. If you were close to Larry and his family, chances are you have seen Larry in his skivvies. But that was Larry; always the life of the party and comfortable with who he was. He will be remembered for his love of life, his generosity, and the love he had for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Bass; children, Lara (Kevin) Kyhl, Leah (Wade) Harriman, Leasha (Josh) Henriksen, and Lane (Casie) Bass; 11 grandchildren, Kiley, Colin, and Corbin Kyhl, Cade and Carson Harriman, Charleigh, Owen, and Landree Henriksen, and Bryce, Brooklyn, and Briley Bass; and sisters-in-law, Barb Sells and Diane Bass.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Lucille Bass, parents-in-law, Mervin and Mary Sells; infant son, Troy Bass; and siblings, Dennis and Doug Bass; and brother-in-law, Bob Sells.

A public visitation will be held 5-7pm, Tuesday, November 7 at New Hartford Community Church. Larry's funeral will be held at 11am, Wednesday, November 8 at New Hartford Community Church with an hour visitation before. Burial will take place immediately following the funeral at Oak Hill Cemetery in New Hartford. Please join the family for a luncheon following graveside services back at the church.
