Kurt Olson passed away peacefully at home on July 18, 2024. He was born on April 3, 1957, in New Haven, Connecticut, and grew up to become a beloved figure in his community and beyond. His parents moved from Connecticut to Ft. Atkinson, IA, where he graduated from Turkey Valley High School.
Kurt's professional journey was marked by entrepreneurial spirit and dedication. He founded Olson & Associates, a successful life and investment company, where he made a lasting impact through his work. Additionally, he owned and managed an apartment building in downtown Cedar Falls, contributing to the local landscape.
Known fondly as "Captain," Kurt's love for the water and boating on the Mississippi River was a defining passion. Often seen with a Gin and Tonic in hand, he enjoyed the freedom and serenity of the river, earning him his cherished nickname.
Beyond his professional and personal pursuits, Kurt embraced life's adventures with enthusiasm. He cherished his travels, with Norway holding a special place in his heart as one of his most memorable destinations. Kurt found immense joy in the company of friends and family, relishing every moment spent together.
Kurt's commitment to community service was exemplary. He was a proud member of the Waterloo Jaycees and the Cedar Falls Lions Club, through which he contributed his time generously to the betterment of his community.
Kurt is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Shawna, and their children, Lindsay Olson of Waukee and Zachary (Erica) Zaputil of Ankeny. He adored his grandchildren, Carter and Adelina Olson, who brought him immeasurable happiness. He is also survived by his brother, Chris Olson of Myrtle Beach, SC; stepfather, Robert Bulgren of Cedar Falls; step-mother, Joyce Olson of Myrtle Beach, SC; and his mother and father-in-law, Nell and Ralph Halweg of Denver, IA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Bulgren, and his father, Thomas Olson.
A Celebration of Life to honor Kurt's remarkable journey will be held on Saturday, September 28, from 2:30-6:30pm, at 3707 S. Main St. in Cedar Falls, where friends and family will come together to share cherished memories and celebrate the legacy of a man who lived life to the fullest.
