Katharina "Katie" Brubaker, 89, of Cedar Falls, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Denver Sunset Home in Denver, Iowa. Born on October 17, 1935, in Schweinfurt, Germany, to Hugo and Lucia (Sweier) Schnabel, Katie spent her early years in Germany before destiny led her to meet the love of her life, George E. Brubaker, during his military service in Schweinfurt, Germany. The two were married in 1957 and shared a beautiful life together for many decades prior to George's passing in 2005.
Katie was a devoted wife and mother, dedicating her time to George and their four children while creating a warm and loving home. After her children grew up and moved out, Katie began a 20-year career at PK Orthotics Lab, where her meticulous hands crafted countless prosthetics and prosthetic devices that improved the lives of others.
Katie and George shared a passion for travel, especially enjoying their snowbird months in Avon Park, Florida. Katie was also an avid angler. She loved fishing as much as she loved crafting. Whether crocheting, knitting, sewing, or working with ceramics, her creativity left a tangible legacy of love for her family and friends. Family was at the heart of Katie's life. She cherished every moment spent with loved ones, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Katie is survived by her four children, Deb (John) Lund, Cindy Brubaker (Denise Nass), Jennifer (Jason) Thompson, and Mike (Laura) Brubaker; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hilde Wick and Herta Bradshaw. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband George Brubaker; and siblings, Gerhard, Manferd, and Lieslotte Schnabel.
A private service will be held at a later date. Cremation entrusted to Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Memorial contributions in Katie's honor may be directed to the Denver Sunset Home, 235 N Mill St, Denver, IA 50622. Please visit www.dahlfuneralhome.com to share condolences with the family.
