KAREN LOUISE KNIPP GILBERT,
54, of Cedar Falls, died after a lengthy battle with cancer on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. Karen was born June 2, 1952 in Heppner, Oregon, the daughter of George M. and Lois Marlene (Kackley) Knipp. She married John T. Gilbert on July 31, 1982 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Waterloo, Iowa. Karen attended St. Mary's Elementary and graduated from West Delaware High School, both in Manchester, Iowa. She received her B.A. in social work from the University of Northern Iowa in 1974, and her MSW from the University of Iowa in 1980. She worked for DHS in Fort Dodge, Iowa for four years and was a school social worker with AEA267 in Black Hawk County for twenty-five years. Karen was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and School, serving on the Board of Education. Karen also enjoyed volunteering as an usher at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center in Cedar Falls.
Survivors include her husband, John, of Cedar Falls; her children, Laura, Alex and Thomas, all at home; five sisters, Kathy Donelson and Kris Meyer, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Karol (Terry) Johnson and Kim (Al) Cole, both of Manchester, Iowa, and Karla (Rob) Beadle of Marion, Iowa; her step-mother, Mary Knipp, of Independence, Iowa; a step-brother, Donnie (Kris) Reidy of Independence; and three step-sisters, Connie (Roger) Kremer of Ottumwa, Iowa, Jane (Craig) Jennings of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Susan (Rick) Schoeberl of Waterloo.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
Funeral services were Monday, July 10, 2006, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. Inurnment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Cedar Falls at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
