Judy Pearl Kampman, 81, went home to be with her Lord on January 18, 2024.
She was born June 13, 1942, to Clifford and LaVelle Smith, a gift for their wedding anniversary. As a teenager, on March 5, 1955 during a gospel series conducted by David Kirk, Judy was born again when she saw her need of a Savior and trusted the finished work of Christ on the cross. She was able to call her grandpa, Evangelist Oliver Smith, in Vancouver the next day to share the happy news.
She married the love of her life, Rod Kampman, on November 28, 1980. Her marriage to Rod really healed the hurt in her broken heart. Rod had the honor of adopting her children, Justin and Penni, whom Judy had adopted in a previous marriage. Rod went home to heaven on December 29, 2021 while they were wintering at Bibleville in Texas.
Judy graduated from Orange Township High School with the class of 1960. After graduation she worked in the administration office with the Orange School District, and Waterloo Public Schools after they merged. She worked for Viking Pump for 10 years before moving to Oskaloosa, IA in 1988. In 1997 they moved to Baxter/Newton area. In both of these locations she worked for the State of Iowa Clerk of Court Offices and retired after a 23-year career with co-workers she loved.
In 2013 Rod and Judy moved back home to the Cedar Valley area where Rod was appointed Director of Riverview Conference Center. Judy enjoyed volunteering full time by his side at Riverview until he retired in 2020. She also enjoyed working for Tranquil Transitions, helping people scale down to smaller living. She and Rod loved Southern Gospel music, attending many concerts, cruises and conventions together. In 2023 Judy joined other team members to help organize Music and Praise, and bring gospel groups back to the Cedar Valley.
Judy was in fellowship with the assembly at Bethany Bible Chapel, where she loved being part of the Bethany family; and served faithfully with the keyboard ministry, kitchen crew, and anywhere an extra pair of hands and feet were needed. She had a ministry writing to people who were incarcerated, with the goal to encourage and uplift them. She enjoyed visiting and doing sing-a-longs at various nursing homes. Being a part of the clothing ministry at Bethany's sister church brought her much joy. Judy thrived on supporting family members, always being ready to be a part of their lives and activities. Family camping was at the top of her list.
Judy is survived by a son, Justin (Lisa) of Newton, IA; step-daughter, Monica Garcia of Underwood, IA; grandchildren, Gavin, Journey; step-grandchildren Mariah, Sylvan, Brooke & Allyson; sister-in-law, Rhonda DeBuhr, of Cedar Falls; several nieces & nephews, Clint (Lisa) DeBuhr, John (Beth) Orr, Julie (David) Harbaugh, Becky (Butch) Peyton, Tara Kampman, Ashley Fenner; many great nieces & nephews, extended Deutsch family; and the family of Penni Kampman.
Preceded in death by her husband, Rod; daughter, Penni; parents; sister, Nancy Orr and brother-in-law, Richard; father and mother-in-law, Bert and Mary Kampman; sister-in-law's, Sharon Kampman and Sheryl Melhorn; nephew Clay DeBuhr and niece, Cindy Orr.
