Jon "Jack" Welcher, 89, of Cedar Falls, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home following a battle with leukemia. He was born November 22, 1934, in Waverly, son of Clarence "Hun" and Catherine (Terry) Welcher. Jack graduated from Waverly High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army. He worked for John Deere for 30 years as a Designer and Engineer, retiring in 1985. Jack married Shirley Silver on January 12, 1973, at United Presbyterian Church. She died January 2, 1981, from breast cancer. On June 5, 1982, he married Maxine (Cannon) Whitehead at Nazareth Lutheran Church. Jack embraced the role of husband and fatherhood with great love and a sense of adventure.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Shirley. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Maxine; children: Dan (Maridee) Whitehead of Deerfield Beach, Florida, Luan (Dan) McGrane of Cedar Falls and Lori (Tim) Segneri of Carlsbad, California; 7 grandchildren: Thomas (Annie) Whitehead, Elizabeth Rizzo, Jess (Matt) Johnson, Ian Lippold, Leah McGrane, Dominic (Morgan) Segneri and Savannah (Christian) Bosely; 8 great-grandchildren: Evie, Quinn, Logan, Lyla, Violet, Leif, Liam and Ari; and 2 brothers: Bill Welcher of Waterloo and Bob (Janice) Welcher of Freeport, Illinois.
Jack's Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, in the worship center at Nazareth Lutheran Church with Visitation the evening prior from 4:00-6:00 pm at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home both of Cedar Falls. Jack will be buried at Fairview Cemetery of Cedar Falls in a private family graveside service. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Habitat for Humanity.
Jack was an active octogenarian who still mowed his own lawn and played golf. In his younger years, he enjoyed go-carts, restoring Corvettes and downhill skiing with Maxine in Colorado. Together they also traveled to Australia, Germany and Italy among other destinations. They played bridge regularly and participated in many activities with their many friends. Above all else, Jack cherished any and all time with family.
