John Martin Schrum

John Martin Schrum, 90, of Cedar Falls, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at UnityPoint Health/Allen Hospital.  He was born December 6, 1932, in Woodward, Iowa, son of Peter and Anita (Warner) Schrum.  John graduated from high school and earned a Bachelor's Degree from Iowa State University.  He, then, entered the United States Army in 1954.  John went on to earn a Master's Degree from Purdue University and a second Masters from the University of Northern Iowa.  He married Marilyn Jean Lister at Christ Lutheran Church in Waterloo on August 9, 1975.  John was passionate about being a Commodity Broker and had also previously taught Ag at Parkersburg, Hawkeye Tech and Upper Iowa University.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Marilyn; and sisters, Mary (in infancy) and Hazel Johnson.  He is survived by his children, Rachel (Joseph) Beasley of Waterloo, Heidi (Jesse) Piehl of Readlyn, and Joshua Schrum of Cedar Falls; 8 grandchildren: Ashley Beasley, Mysti Beasley, Jared Piehl, Adam Piehl, Danica Piehl, Ellie Piehl, Lucy Piehl, and Amelia Piehl; 2 great grandchildren; and 4 brothers: Hans and Jerry (Gail) of California, Robert of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Steve (Carol) of Grand Junction.

John's Funeral Service will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Cedar Falls with Visitation the evening prior from 5 – 7:00 pm at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home of Cedar Falls.  Entombment to follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.  Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Valley Lutheran Schools and Condolences can be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com.

John enjoyed learning and talking about politics, reading, history and his faith.  He enjoyed taking walks and playing tennis with his daughter, Rachel, when he was younger.  John was also very proud of his German heritage.
