John E. "Jack" Grieger, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, June 17, 2012, at the Western Home Communities Elizabeth Martin Health Center, in Cedar Falls. He was born July 4, 1924 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Edward J. and Opal (Jenkins) Grieger. Jack married Doris J. Eltjes on August 8, 1944 in Memphis, Tennessee. She preceded him in death on December 21, 2010. Jack served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo prior to the war and later became a Federal Meat Inspector. In 1955 he opened Reece & Grieger Meats Inc. in Cedar Falls, selling the business in 1980. He then worked for fifteen years at the Gilbertville Locker. Survivors include his son, David (Pam) Grieger, of St. Peters, Missouri, his daughter-in-law, Jackie Grieger, of Waterloo; three grandsons, two granddaughters, one great grandson, one nephew and three nieces. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and wife, a son, Douglas K. Grieger, and a sister, Mercina Eastman. Services will be 10:30 am Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Family will receive friends one hour before the service. There will be no viewing, his body was cremated. Inurnment will be at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum in Waterloo at a later date. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.
