John W. Heyenga, 68, of Waterloo, passed away at his home on Sunday, August 18, 2024.
John was born in Cedar Falls on July 28, 1956, the son of Walter and Johanna (Oelmann) Heyenga. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1976, and pursued further education at Hawkeye Institute of Technology, graduating in 1978. Later, John earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Upper Iowa University in 1998. He worked for Montgomery Ward department stores for a number of years before joining the assembly team at Standard Golf.
From an early age, John's faith in Jesus was the cornerstone of his life. During his high school years, John was actively involved with the Christian youth group, Young Life Group, where he nurtured his spirituality and commitment to his faith. John was also a man with many passions. He loved to read, immerse himself in woodworking projects, and master the art of barbeque. John was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, and made an effort to watch a game whenever he could. His love for Southern Gospel music brought him great joy throughout his life. John will be remembered for his insight, his sweet spirit and kind soul.
John is survived by his sisters, Mary (Larry) Smith of Broken Arrow, OK, Cathy (Albert) Humke of Cedar Falls, Joyce (Matthew) Whipps of West Des Moines, and Rev. Dee Stone of Atlanta, GA; and nieces and nephews, Aaron Smith, Adam Smith, Andrea Smith, Daniel (Kristin) Humke, Sarah Humke, Laura (Dale) Lancaster, and Jenny Stone. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Johanna Heyenga.
John's funeral service will be held at 10:30am, Friday, August 23, 2024, at Trinity Bible Church in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be held at the church Thursday, August 22, from 5-7pm and continue the following day at 9:30am. Please join the family for a reception immediately following the funeral service at the church. Graveside services will follow the reception at Stout Cemetery in Stout, IA, at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John's memory may be directed to
