John W. Henderson

John W. Henderson, 87, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Burlington, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton in Hampton, Iowa. He was born October 25, 1925 in Vandalia, Missouri, the son of Hugh and Mellie (Lott) Henderson. John married Mildred Marshall Orton in September of 1965 in Wapello, Iowa, and she preceded him in death on June 11, 1982. He married Betty Bacon Hovey on October 25, 1993 in Cedar Falls. She preceded him in death on May 20, 1996. John served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and was a mechanic for forty years, retiring in 1982. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. Survivors include his son, John D. Henderson, of Burlington, Iowa; his daughter, Dawn Henderson, of Redlands, California; two step sons, Steve Hovey of Phoenix, Arizona and Edward Hovey of Chicago, Illinois; two step daughters, Vicky Orton of Texas City, Texas and Cindy Isaccs of Chattaroy, Washington; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and one brother, Francis Henderson, of W. Des Moines. John was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, four brothers and a sister. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial at Hillside Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be one hour before service. A memorial fund will be established.
