John Philip Christman, 84, Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at his home with his loving wife by his side under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice.
John was born July 30, 1941 in Joplin, MO to Arthur and Jane (Harsh) Christman. He graduated from high school in Wichita, KS and continued his education at the Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore, OK. John honorably served his country in the US Air Force. John married the love of his life, Carolyn Greening, on August 10, 1968 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Waterloo. He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven, CT and worked as a chef for over 40 years. John notably worked as the Food Manager for Bishop's Buffett in Cedar Falls for 29 years.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Carolyn; daughter, Beth E. Christman of Sumner; grandchildren, Alex Kelling, Tabitha Cox and Sabrina (fiancé, Kale Smith) Cox; sister, Marilyn Christman of Jefferson City, MO; sister-in-law, Georgina Christman of Centennial, CO; brother-in-law, Dennis Greening of Brookline, MA; and extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Jane Christman; brother, Rev. William Christman; grandparents, William and Clara Christman and James and Hazel Harsh.
The memorial service for John will be 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 1st at Nazareth Lutheran Church – Larsen Chapel (please use entrance 7). Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church on Wednesday. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer that memorials may be directed to Nazareth Lutheran Church (Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church, Attn: Finance,7401 University Ave., Cedar Falls, IA 50613), the Salvation Army of Waterloo (89 Franklin Street, Waterloo, IA) or Cedar Valley Hospice (PO Box 2880, Waterloo, IA 50704).
