Johanna Gasena Oelmann Heyenga was born on May 19, 1920 to John Henry and Jennie Meester Oelmann on the family farm southeast of Parkersburg. It is there she grew to womanhood. She graduated from Beaver No. 3 rural school, Parkersburg High School and attended ISTC, now UNI, to receive a rural school diploma, and then taught in the rural schools of Grundy and Butler counties.

On May 11, 1948 she was married to Walter John Heyenga at the Stout Reformed Church by the late Rev. W. J. Heyenga. They lived in Parkersburg, Stout and then moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa in November 1953. She with her family became charter members of the Orchard Hill Reformed Church where they were active members in many capacities.

Mr. Heyenga passed away on January 26, 1990 in Brewton, Alabama where they spent winters working as volunteer missionaries at Southern Normal School. They were also active members of Gideons International which Johanna continued after his death. Johanna was employed at UNI in the Registrar's Office for 20 years.

Survivors include four children, Mary (Larry) Smith of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Cathy (Albert) Humke of Cedar Falls, John of Cedar Falls and Joyce (Matthew) Whipps of West Des Moines; six grandchildren, Aaron, Adam and Andrea Smith, Daniel, Sarah and Laura Humke; one sister, Annie Oelmann of Parkersburg and one brother-in-law, Calvin Heyenga of Stout. Johanna was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 14, 2009, at Orchard Hill Church with burial in Stout Cemetery, Stout, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for one hour prior to service time at the church. Memorials may be given to Gideons International, Cedar Falls Bible Conference or the Orchard Hill Church Building Fund. Online condolences may be left at www.DahlFuneralHome.com.
