Jeanette "Jan" M. Hanson went to her heavenly home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at the Western Home Communities Deery Suites in Cedar Falls, IA.
Jan was born July 29, 1943, in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Merland and Lillian (Dahl) Tollefson. After graduating from North High School in 1961, she attended Mankato State University and graduated with a degree in Home Economics while minoring in Chemistry. Following college, Jan worked as a Dietician at North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis. She married James Mashek and had four children together, Kim, Ann, Jodi, and Jill. They later divorced.
Jan owned and operated Jan's Bernina Sewing Center and Jan's Rentals in Cedar Falls. She was an excellent salesperson and also repaired sewing machines. Jan's customers loved her and many of them became personal friends. She belonged to Mothers of Twins Club in Cedar Falls for many years and enjoyed all of the fun and get-togethers with her dear friends.
Jan met Dan Hanson at a local Christian Singles Ministry, and were later married. Together they cherished an active life which included dancing. They loved to dance at the Electric Park Ballroom, Surf Ballroom, and many other venues in Eastern Iowa. They performed dance routines at special events at Electric Park. They also taught dancing on Princess Cruise Line ships and enjoyed dancing and cruising every year on Holland America Line. They also enjoyed bicycling together on the Cedar Valley trails and participated in the MS-TRAM Bike Ride Across Minnesota for 17 years, to raise money for a cure for MS. Gardening was another passion of hers. Together they raised perennial plants and flowers, and in 2008, were featured in the Cedar Falls Historical Society's Annual Garden Walk. Jan was a member of Fresh Wind Ministries in Cedar Falls. She was known for her hearty laugh that brought cheer and laughter to all around her. Jan loved life and shared it abundantly with others.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bruce, Duane, Henry, and Richard Tollefson; and sister, Karen Bensen. She is survived by her brothers, Tom, Merland, and Dale (Marlene) Tollefson; sisters, Linnae (Butch) Raymond, Lois (Paul) Etre, and Nancy (Dave) Hogness; children, Kim Henny, Ann (Dave) Miller, Jill (Rob) Schroeder, and Jodi (Dave) Stumpner; grandchildren, Katie, Michelle, Laura, Eric, Sarah, Ashley, Alex, Samantha, Abigail, Juliette, and Addison; great-grandchildren, Charlie, Natalie, and Will; and step-daughters, Jenny and Kari Hanson.
