Janet Whitney Green-Ostby

Janet "Gms" Whitney Green-Ostby was born May 14, 1954 in Waterloo, Iowa, to Charles Walter and Patricia Ann (Chamber) Whitney. After graduating from Waterloo West High School in 1972, she had three beautiful children, Kelly, Sarah and Adam. In 1980, Janet married Randy Ostby in Waterloo and shared 50 years of marriage together.

Janet was a devoted stay at home mom for years. Later, she started her career as a paraeducator with Waterloo Community Schools. She retired from Waterloo Community Schools two different times! Finally, at 65, she said "peace out!"

Janet was also a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. She had a great balance in life with family, work, friends, and hobbies, and made it look so easy. She enjoyed having a beautiful yard and would buy all the plants, trees, and flowers, to keep her and Randy busy for hours in the yard. Janet was known for her generosity and constant support for her children, grandchildren, grand-puppies, and great-grand-puppy. Family always came first for Janet and she will be greatly missed.

Janet passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 22, 2025. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sweet sister Ann Shaner, whom Janet was so excited to be reunited with.

Janet is survived by her husband, Randy Ray Ostby of Cedar Falls; children, Kelly Ranae Lovstad of Clear Lake, Sarah (Josh) Winberg of Cedar Falls, and Adam (Lisa) Ostby of Waterloo; grandchildren, Landon Gene Lovstad, Mason Ryder, Addison Elizabeth and Kierra Whitney Winberg, Ezekiel Robert and Ethan Daniel Menteer, Kaya Marie Kruse, Laken Kay and Maise Ray Ostby; brother, Jim (Karla) Whitney of Cedar Falls; brother-in-law, Dan Shaner; many nieces and nephews; great niece and nephews; and many friends she loved dearly.

Janet's celebration of life will be held at 3pm, Monday, December 29, 2025, with visitation an hour prior at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls.
