James "Jim" Michael Metcalf, 79, of Janesville, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the Waverly Health Center. He was born in Sioux City, on August 2, 1945, son of Glenn and Marie (Rabel) Metcalf. Jim graduated from Spencer High School with the Class of 1963, then received his B.F.A. from South Dakota State/Vermillion in 1968. He entered the United States Marine Corps serving from 1969-1972, then following an honorable discharge, returned to South Dakota State where he worked at a radio station as a disc jockey while in law school. Jim earned his law degree in 1975 and practiced law for 50 years. On December 31, 1983, he married Debra J. Acker in Waterloo. In his younger years, Jim enjoyed playing racquetball, cross country skiing, sailing and traveling. He was very proud of his service in the Marine Corps. Above all else, Jim loved his family and cherished spending time with them at their lake home in Chetek, WI.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Gary Lee Metcalf. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Debbie; children: Charlie (Roxy) Metcalf of Janesville, Priscilla (Ryan) Smith of Stillwater, MN, Libby (Greg) Hintgen of Sioux Falls, SD and Clair Metcalf; grandchildren: Amelia, Alexander and Ava Smith, Clara and Gabrielle Hintgen, Noah Metcalf, Madeline and Otis Farrell and another grandson on the way; siblings: Bob (Sue) Metcalf of Spencer and Lisa (Vance) Guinn of Pinedale, WY; and extended family members and cherished friends.
Jim's Memorial Service will be 11:00 am on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at St. John Lutheran Church (and will be livestreamed on church's facebook page ) Visitation will be from 4-6:00 pm Wednesday evening at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Waterloo Memorial Park with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Tunnels to Towers Foundation . Jim's family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the ER staff at the Waverly Health Center and, especially, Dr. Bob Roof.
