James R. "Big Jim" Lathan, 57, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, September 19, 2008 at his home. He was born December 20, 1950 in Ford County, Kansas, the son of the Rev. A. Wylie & Shirley Mae (Wynne) Lathan. He attended Emporia State University in Kansas and then graduated as a music major from the University of Northern Iowa. James married Christine Sommerfelt on September 2, 1986 in Waterloo. He was employed as a truck driver for United Blue Line Moving & Storage in Cedar Falls for 33 years.
Survivors include his wife, Chris Lathan; his son, Arthur Lathan; and his daughter, Abby Lathan, all of Cedar Falls; his Mother, Shirley Lathan of Shawnee, Kansas; three brothers, John (Kathy) Lathan of Minnesota, William (Mary Ellen) Lathan of Texas and Steve Lathan of Texas; his sister, Deb Lathan of Kansas, three nieces, three nephews and one great nephew.

James was preceded in death by his father and two sisters, Pamela & Phyllis Lathan.

Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family or Amenity Hospice.
