James "Jim" Kress, 89, of Cedar Falls, died peacefully at home on Friday, June 7, 2013. Survived by his wife, Inge, of Cedar Falls; children, Richard (Dorothy) Kress of Kotzebue, Alaska, Arthur (Susan) Kress of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Andrea Kress, of High Point, North Carolina, and Daryl Kress of Hugo, Minnesota; grandchildren, Corey, Abigail, Tracey & Ashley, and great grandchild, Autumn. Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Fanny (nee Forester) Kress and his brother, Louis. Jim will be remembered for his service as a WW II soldier, engineering profession, his love as a family man, and his great sense of humor. As a WW II soldier, Jim served in central Europe with the Rainbow Division, where he met his wife, Inge, in Tyrol, Austria. They married in 1950. After the war, Jim worked as a mechanical engineer for John Deere, where his advanced designs for hydrostatic transmissions went on to be patented and produced in many tractors. He will most be remembered as a family man devoted to his wife and children. Jim, you will be missed. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
